For more than a century, Cobleigh Public Library has served Lyndonville and the greater Lyndon area as a place to read, learn, gather, and connect.
The library’s story began in 1905, when Eber W. Cobleigh donated $15,000 to build a public library for the community. The site at Main and Depot Street was purchased soon after, and the building was completed in late 1906. Designed by William J. Sayward, whose firm had also worked on the Boston Public Library; Cobleigh Public Library was dedicated and opened to the public in January 1907.

Since then, the library has grown alongside the community it serves. A children’s room was added through a basement renovation in 1976, and in 1995 the building expanded again with an adult learning center, computer lab, renovated attic space, and an elevator to improve accessibility. Later improvements included a larger bookmobile, building updates, an automated catalog, and an online presence.
Today, Cobleigh Public Library is more than a place to borrow books. It is an inviting community center offering programs, services, books and materials, public space, and information for residents throughout the Lyndon area. The library helps people of all ages explore new interests, support personal growth, and build a lifelong love of reading.
Our services include traditional library collections, children’s programming, public access resources, digital books and audiobooks through the Libby app, home delivery for housebound patrons, museum and park passes, and a growing “Library of Things” with items such as fishing poles, games, mobility aids, sports equipment, and a telescope.
Cobleigh is also a place for families. The Children’s Library offers storytime programs for young children, with stories, songs, fingerplays, rhymes, crafts, and early literacy activities designed to help children build confidence and curiosity from an early age.

The library’s continued success is rooted in community support. Generations of individuals, clubs, organizations, donors, volunteers, and public partners have helped keep Cobleigh strong. The Friends of the Cobleigh Library continue that tradition today through fundraising, volunteer work, annual events, and support for both the library and the Bookmobile.
At its heart, Cobleigh Public Library remains what it has always been: a welcoming place for the community to learn, discover, share, and belong. Whether you are visiting for a book, a program, a quiet place to work, help with technology, or a connection to local resources, Cobleigh is here for you.
