Underwater Historic Preserves
Not all history happens on land! Lake Champlain, one of the nation’s most historic waterways, contains countless shipwrecks–military, commercial and private vessels–dating back to the 1700s.  The State maintains five underwater historic sites for scuba divers–the Horse Ferry, the Phoenix, the Coal Barge, the General Butler and the Diamond Island Stone Boat.  Each preserve is marked by yellow buoys with guidelines providing safe and easy access to the wrecks.
Diving guidelines are available by calling the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum at 802-475-2022.

Veterans and Seniors can obtain a Green Mountain Pssport from their town clerk’s office, for a one-time fee of $2.00.  The Passport allows free access to Historic Sites if you are a legal resident of Vermont and 62 years of age or older, OR a veteran of the uniformed services.

All Active Military Personnel (and immediate families) are always admitted free!

All passes go out for three days.  All are on a first come first serve basis.  No renewals or reserves.  Call the library to check if the passes are available, 626-5475.

Sorry, we no longer have Montshire passes.
